How it works

Days late

Counted from the day after the due date to the date you file or pay. Due dates follow the GST calendar for your filing frequency.

Late fee

Per-day rate × days, then capped by your turnover slab. Split equally between CGST and SGST; no late fee under IGST.

Interest

18% a year on the tax paid late through the cash ledger, for GSTR-3B only. Nothing on the ITC-set-off portion or on nil returns.

Work out exactly what a late GST return will cost

The portal only shows the late fee once you try to file. This calculator shows it in advance for GSTR-3B, GSTR-1 and the GSTR-9 annual return, applying the turnover-based caps and nil-return rates, and adds Section 50 interest on any tax you are paying late. Useful for deciding whether to file today or wait for a payment to clear, and for quantifying a client's exposure before an amnesty window closes.

Turnover-based caps

₹2,000, ₹5,000 or ₹10,000 for GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 depending on preceding-year turnover. Nil returns cap at ₹500.

GSTR-9 graded fee

₹50, ₹100 or ₹200 per day with percentage-of-turnover caps, as introduced from FY 2022-23.

Interest on cash only

Section 50 interest applies to the net liability paid in cash, not the part discharged through ITC.

CGST / SGST split

Every late fee figure is shown as the two equal halves the portal will ask you to pay.
