Indicative only. Section 10(13A) read with Rule 2A. Available under the old tax regime only. Compute separately for any period in which salary, rent or city changed.

How it works

Three figures

HRA received; rent paid less 10% of salary; and 50% or 40% of salary depending on city. The exemption is the smallest of the three.

Salary base

Basic plus dearness allowance that counts toward retirement benefits. Other allowances are excluded.

The rest is taxable

Whatever HRA remains after the exemption is added to salary income and taxed at your slab.

See the HRA exemption your payroll should be applying

Most salary slips show the HRA paid but not the exemption, and the exemption depends on rent, city and the basic-plus-DA base rather than on CTC. Enter the four figures and the calculator shows each leg of the Rule 2A test, which one is binding, and what remains taxable. It also flags the landlord-PAN and TDS thresholds, which are the two compliance points most often missed at proof-submission time.

Old regime only

HRA exemption is given up under Section 115BAC. If rent is high, it is often the reason to stay on the old regime.

Four metro cities

Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai get 50%. Every other city, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad, gets 40%.

Binding leg shown

The result highlights which of the three figures actually limited the exemption, so you can see what would change it.

Thresholds flagged

Landlord PAN above ₹1 lakh a year; 2% TDS above ₹50,000 a month.
