How it works
Reference the invoice
Credit notes are issued against a specific tax invoice. Enter its number and date; they print in the header.
Reason and items
Pick the reason and list what is being credited at the original rate and GST rate so the tax reversal is correct.
Print and report
Print / Save PDF, send to the customer and declare the note in GSTR-1 for the month it is issued.
Credit notes under Section 34 of the CGST Act
A supplier issues a credit note when the taxable value or tax on an invoice turns out to be too high: goods are returned, found deficient, or a post-sale discount is agreed. Declared in GSTR-1, it reduces the supplier's output tax, provided the recipient reverses the matching input credit. The note must be issued by 30 November following the financial year of the invoice, or the date of the annual return, whichever is earlier.
Original invoice mandatory
A credit note that does not reference the original invoice cannot be matched in the GST system and the tax reduction is not available.
Discounts after sale
Allowed only if the discount was agreed at or before supply and can be linked to the invoice; otherwise issue a financial credit note without GST.
Time limit
Issue and declare it by 30 November of the following year or the tax benefit lapses, though the commercial credit still stands.
Numbering
Its own series, e.g. CN-2026-27-0001, up to 16 characters.
